Baseball, often considered America’s national pastime, is a sport that has been traditionally associated with fathers and sons bonding over the love of the game. However, the connection between moms and baseball should not be overlooked. In fact, moms play a crucial role in introducing and fostering a love for baseball in their children, both sons and daughters.

Moms are often the primary caregivers and decision makers in their children’s lives. They are the ones who sign their children up for youth baseball teams, take them to practices and games, and provide the support and encouragement they need to pursue their passion for baseball. This support is vital in helping children develop the confidence and skills necessary to succeed in the sport.

Moms also help to break down gender barriers in baseball. As the sport has been traditionally male-dominated, mothers have played a vital role in encouraging their daughters to pursue baseball and softball while providing them with the necessary resources to succeed. They have also been advocates for increased opportunities and visibility for women in baseball, from youth leagues to college and professional teams.

Moms also are role models for their children, showing them that anything is possible regardless of gender. They demonstrate that women can be successful in baseball and that it is not just a men’s sport. They also challenge the stereotype that baseball is not for girls, which can help to change the culture of the sport and make it more inclusive for everyone.

UCHealth isn’t the only one with close connections to women and moms.  There are many Major League Baseball (MLB) players who have close connections with their mothers. Here are a few examples:

  1. Derek Jeter: The former New York Yankees shortstop has often credited his mother, Dorothy, with instilling in him a strong work ethic and a love of baseball. She was the one who signed him up for little league, and she was always supportive of his baseball career.

  2. Mike Trout: The Los Angeles Angels outfielder has spoken publicly about the close relationship he has with his mother, Debbie. She was a softball player and has been a huge influence on him as a player and a person.

  3. Albert Pujols: The former St. Louis Cardinal and Los Angeles Angel’s first baseman has a close relationship with his mother, Irma. She was the one who taught him how to play baseball, and she has been a constant source of support throughout his career.

  4. David Ortiz: The former Boston Red Sox designated hitter has a close relationship with his mother, Angela. She passed away in a car accident when he was just 14 years old, but her memory has been a constant inspiration to him throughout his baseball career.

These are just a few examples of MLB players who have close connections with their mothers. Many players credit their mothers with being instrumental in their development as players and as people, and their mothers continue to be a source of support and inspiration throughout their baseball careers.
